The Science of Coconut Oil for Skin & Intimate Wellness

When we first began testing formulations for Bumlicious, I brought home dozens of samples. Creams, gels, water-based serums—you name it. But nothing felt right. They either evaporated into a sticky residue or felt uncomfortably synthetic. I wanted something that felt like a plush, dense cushion that turned friction into warmth.

If you trace the history of skincare back through the centuries you'll find people relying on botanical oils, rich waxes, and natural fats to protect and nourish their skin. At the very top of that list is the humble coconut.

Interestingly, coconut oil has earned devoted followers across skincare, wellness, and intimate care communities alike—not because it's trendy, but because generations of people have found value in its simplicity.

How Does Coconut Oil Support the Skin Barrier?

Your skin has a natural, protective outer layer—the lipid barrier. This barrier is responsible for locking moisture in and keeping environmental stressors out.

Dermatologists often discuss Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL), which is exactly what it sounds like: water evaporating from your skin, leaving it dry, tight, and vulnerable. Research has shown that topical application of coconut oil helps support the skin barrier and helps lock in moisture (Source: National Institutes of Health). It is an ingredient traditionally associated with soothing properties and softening dry, flaky skin (Source: PubMed/Dermatological Studies).

"Slip meets nourishment. The best lubricant is the one you stop noticing because your body feels completely supported."

Why Not Just Use Grocery Store Coconut Oil?

We get this question all the time. While raw, culinary coconut oil is incredible, it can be heavy, temperature-dependent (turning solid in the winter), and sometimes pore-clogging on its own.

That is why Bum Oil uses a strategic, proprietary blend of pure coconut oil and fractionated coconut oil. Fractionating removes the long-chain fatty acids, resulting in an oil that is liquid at room temperature, incredibly lightweight, and fast-absorbing.

We then fold in Vitamin E oil for antioxidant support, alongside beeswax and soy wax to create a velvety, cushioning texture that feels like liquid silk.

Why Does Water-Based Lube Dry Out?

Different lubricant categories are designed for different experiences and preferences. Water-based lubricants remain popular because they're versatile and widely compatible. However, many people find they need to reapply them more frequently during longer sessions. They act as humectants, meaning they absorb quickly into porous tissue, leaving you dry and forcing you to constantly reapply.

That's one reason some people are drawn to oil-based formulations. Rather than absorbing quickly, they tend to provide a more persistent, cushioning glide. We'll explore the differences between lubricant categories in more detail in a future article.

When you use an intentionally formulated product like Bum Oil, the experience shifts. The oil works with your body. It provides a luxurious, continuous, melting glide. You aren't just reducing friction; you are investing in your intimate wellness.
